Vienna: Vienna is ideal for art and music enthusiasts. The Vienna Boys’ Choir and the Vienna Philharmonic are internationally renowned. Art Nouveau buildings, such as the Majolica haus, line the streets of some suburbs, as Vienna was the birthplace of this ten controversial style. The Schloss Schonbrunn, home to the oldest 200 in he world, with its landscaped park, can be compared with the sumptuous palace at Versailles. Spring, sees the Festival of Vienna with concerts, operas and theatre performances. The Wiener Staatsoper itself,
offers a well-selected programme, between September and June. Guided tours at the opera, and the stage are held regularly during July and August. Right behind the Opera, is the hotel Sacher, famous over the world
for its chocoholics’ dream Sachertorte and other Viennese specialties.
Our suggestion: enjoy the train ride to Salzburg on the new luxurious Imperial Amadeus Train launched in 2006 from Vienna.
Prague: Prague is noted for some magnificent Gothic, Baroque and Romanesque, Belle Époque/Art Nouveau and cubist architecture and a cultural scene of elegance. There is the annual spring music Festival, the excellent Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and the national Theatre. Worth visiting are the St. Nicholas Cupola, the Town Hall of the Old City , where you can also see the Gothic Tyn Church and the beautiful 15th century astronomical clock in the Old Town Square.
Budapest and the Danube: The capital city of Budapest, situated on one of the most beautiful areas of the Danube, is made up of two parts Buda and Pest. The former, is the older, more graceful part with cobbled streets and medieval buildings, the latter is the commercial center. Hungary’s capital is a lively city, which has long been a heaven for writers, artists and musicians. In the Buda section one can find Gellert Hill, with a wonderful view of the city, river and mountains; on the hill is the Citadella, a stone fort. Also in the Buda region, is the Fisherman’s Bastion and the Matthias Church with its multicoloured tiled roof. On the Pest side are the Parliament, the Hungarian National Museum containing remarkable treasures, Hungary’s oldest church, the Museum of Fine Arts and Margaret Island connected to both Buda and Pest by a bridge.
Lake Balaton: The lake is a popular holiday region, not least because of its sandy beaches and shallow waters. The surrounding countryside consists of mainly fertile plains dotted with old villages.
